This itinerary gives you the 4 different faces of Mizoram:

Aizawl → Mizo urban culture
Reiek → iconic mountain scenery
Hmuifang → forest & rural Mizoram
Thenzawl/Vantawng → waterfall & countryside

And importantly, you return to Aizawl every night, so you don't have to keep changing hotels.

Day 1 — Thursday, 17 September

Kolkata → Aizawl | Easy evening in Aizawl

The flight is only about 1 hr 15 min and is currently scheduled nonstop.

15:20–16:45

• Airport formalities
• Meet your driver
• Drive towards Aizawl
• Check into hotel

Allow roughly 1–1½ hours for the airport-to-city transfer depending on traffic/weather.

Evening – Aizawl

Keep this evening deliberately relaxed.

• Durtlang Hills viewpoint around sunset
• Check out the beautiful hill-city landscape
• Walk around Bara Bazaar
• Dinner at a good local restaurant

Night: Aizawl

My hotel strategy: stay in central Aizawl rather than near the airport. You will appreciate being in the city for the next two evenings.

Day 2 — Friday, 18 September

Reiek — the signature Mizoram day

This should be your most scenic day.

6:30–7:00 AM

Breakfast and depart Aizawl.

8:00 AM – Reiek

Reiek is only around 25–30 km from Aizawl, making it one of the best excursions when you have limited time.

Spend around 3–4 hours here.

Do:

• Reiek Peak
• Short hike/trek, depending on weather and fitness
• Reiek viewpoint
• Reiek Heritage Village
• Photography
• Tea/snacks with the hills around you

On a clear day, the views are spectacular.

12:30–1:30 PM

Lunch around Reiek / return towards Aizawl.

Afternoon – Aizawl sightseeing

Visit:

Mizoram State Museum
Good for understanding Mizo history, culture, traditional dress and lifestyle.

Then:

Solomon's Temple / surrounding viewpoint

Evening

Have a relaxed evening in Aizawl.

If you enjoy exploring local markets, spend some time around Bara Bazaar.

Day 3 — Saturday, 19 September

Hmuifang + Mizo countryside

This is where I would take you away from the city.

7:00 AM

Breakfast.

7:30 AM – Depart for Hmuifang

Hmuifang is about 50 km south of Aizawl and the government tourism site gives a road journey of roughly 1 hr 20 min. It sits at about 1,619 metres and is surrounded by preserved forest and grasslands.

9:00 AM – Hmuifang

Spend the morning around:

• Hmuifang Tlang
• Forest and mountain viewpoints
• Grasslands
• Short nature walk
• Nearby Mizo villages
• Photography

This is a very different experience from Aizawl — quiet, green and much more rural.

12:00 PM

Lunch at/around Hmuifang.

1:00 PM onwards

I would not push all the way to Vantawng Falls today if your priority is a relaxed, quality trip.

Instead, explore the countryside around Hmuifang and gradually return towards Aizawl.

You can include Falkawn/Zokhua, a traditional Mizo village cultural centre, if road conditions and time permit. The government describes Falkawn as a place showcasing traditional Mizo village life.

5:00–6:00 PM

Return to Aizawl.

Evening

Special dinner night.

Ask the hotel/driver to arrange a good place serving authentic Mizo food.

Try:

• Bai
• Sawhchiar
• Local-style pork/chicken preparations
• Mizo vegetables and herbs

Day 4 — Sunday, 20 September

Thenzawl + Vantawng Falls

This is your long driving day, but I think it is worth doing because Vantawng is one of the major natural attractions of Mizoram.

6:00 AM

Early breakfast.

6:30 AM – Depart Aizawl

This is the day when I would hire a dedicated private SUV with an experienced local driver.

En route

Enjoy the changing landscape:

Aizawl → Hmuifang side → Thenzawl → Vantawng

Around 10:00 AM – Thenzawl

Stop for tea/coffee and explore the area.

If time permits:

• Thenzawl town
• Handloom/craft shops
• Thenzawl Golf Resort area
• Scenic viewpoints

Around 11:00 AM – Vantawng Falls

Vantawng is the highest and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Mizoram, with a recorded height of around 750 ft. The government tourism site specifically notes that September to January is a good period to visit, with greater clarity.

There is a proper viewing tower, so you don't need to undertake a difficult descent.

12:00–1:00 PM

Lunch around Thenzawl/Serchhip.

1:00 PM onwards

Start the return journey to Aizawl.

The official district information puts Vantawng roughly 137 km from Aizawl, while road estimates vary considerably depending on the route and conditions.

So I would keep this day flexible rather than packing in too many additional attractions.

5:30–6:30 PM

Reach Aizawl.

Final evening

This is your last evening in Mizoram.

I would keep it simple:

• Sunset/viewpoint
• Shopping for Mizo handicrafts
• Coffee
• Nice dinner
• Pack

Day 5 — Monday, 21 September

Aizawl → Kolkata

You said your return flight is around 2 PM.

So don't plan any major sightseeing.

7:00 AM

Breakfast.

8:00–8:30 AM

Check out.

If you want, make one short final stop at a viewpoint/market for souvenirs.

Around 10:00 AM

Leave Aizawl for Lengpui Airport.

Around 11:15 AM

Reach airport. ~2:00 PM

Aizawl → Kolkata

I would not recommend Champhai/Rih Dil or Lunglei for this particular trip. They are excellent destinations, but with only 3½ sightseeing days you would spend too much of your holiday inside the car. Mizoram's roads and terrain make distances more time-consuming than they appear on a map; the state itself notes that road travel between attractions requires significant time and energy.

Transport

For the Vantawng day especially, an experienced local driver is worth the money.

One important point: September is still a potentially wet period in Mizoram. Vantawng itself is particularly attractive from September onward, but hill-road conditions can change, so I would keep some flexibility on the waterfall day. The official tourism information also identifies September–January as a favourable period for Vantawng.
